Steve Everts is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a Certified Specialist in Family Law.  He is asked to serve frequently as Judge and Commissioner Pro-Tem for the Family Law Section of the Maricopa County Superior Court.  He is rated AV (highest competency/ethical standard) by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.  He has been licensed to practice in both Arizona and Utah for over 30 years in both federal and state courts and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Steve graduated in 1973 with a B.A. in English from the University of Utah and in 1976 with a J.D. degree from the University of Utah College of Law.  During law school he worked for the Utah State Attorney General’s Office doing criminal and securities appellate work.  Immediately after law school he came to Arizona and has practiced with Udall Shumway ever since.

During his early practice, Steve gained extensive jury trial experience in the personal injury field, mainly in the areas of products liability, medical malpractice and wrongful death.  As a young lawyer he was fortunate to be involved in several large seven-figure personal injury settlements and judgments.  This training has proved invaluable for courtroom experience.

In1988, Steve went through his own divorce with two young children.  He realized that many of the lawyers practicing in this area had only limited personal experience with divorce and many of the emotional and other issues surrounding it.  As a result, he was continually asked to assist people in this area.  His practice in Family Law eventually grew so fast it became his primary specialty.

Steve has represented over 1,000 clients in Family Law disputes.  He averages between 60-75 court appearances and 6-10 trials per year.  He has been lead counsel on nine jury trials.  He has attended over 75 continuing legal education seminars and parenting courses in the field of Family Law.  He has written the briefs and handled the appeals in over 30 appellate cases, most of which he has won.  He has published an article on products liability in the Arizona Bar Journal and conducted a seminar on Child Custody in Arizona (2000).  He has served for 10 years on the Management Committee of Udall Shumway (six of which he served as Managing Partner) and over 24 years as a Trustee of the firm’s retirement plan.
