John Lyons is a 1965 graduate of the University of Arizona College of Law, where he served as a writer and Assistant Editor of the Law Review.
Following his graduation, he joined the Phoenix law firm of O'Connor, Cavanagh, Anderson, Westover, Killingsworth & Beshears, where for 8 years he specialized in the defense of personal injury and wrongful death claims. He also represented insurance companies in the defense of insurance coverage claims.
When he joined the Udall, Shumway firm in 1973 as a senior partner, Mr. Lyons continued with the same general areas of practice, but over the years changed from primarily defending such cases to representing people who had been injured or whose family members had been the victims of wrongful death. He has developed sub-specialties in the areas of medical malpractice and large truck accidents.
Mr. Lyons has tried in excess of 50 jury cases to a verdict and has handled in excess of 25 appeals in state and federal appellate courts. He has been rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell for many years.
Mr. Lyons is a member of the State Bar of Arizona (1965), United States District Court for the District of Arizona (1965), Ninth United States Circuit Court of Appeals (1971), and United States Supreme Court (1983).
He has served as a member and chairman of the Arizona Supreme Court Committee on Examinations (1974-1981); member of the Maricopa County Commission on Trial Court Appointments (1983-1987); member and Chairman of the Arizona State Bar Committee on Professionalism (1990-1991) and Client Security Fund (1990-1991); and member of the Arizona Supreme Court Special Committee to Study Civil Litigation Abuse, Cost and Delay (1990-1995).
Mr. Lyons and his wife served a mission in the Philippines for their church between 1991-1994. Upon his return he resumed the full-time practice of law, which he continues to this date.
