Family Law associate Lindsay Olivarez has been selected as the East Squad Attorney Coach for the 2012-2013 Xavier College Preparatory Mock Trial Team. The Mock Trial program at Xavier has four squads competing at the Arizona Regional Tournament. Squads from Xavier have historically competed at the State and National levels. The mock trials simulate real court trials with students presenting full criminal or civil trials, typically to actual seated volunteer Judges. The students take on roles such as lawyers, defendants and witnesses and utilize much the same rules of evidence and procedure as real Superior Court civil and criminal trials, allowing students to understand and experience what a real court trial is like. The East Squad will compete at the Regional Tournament at the Maricopa County Superior Court on March 2, 2013. The State Tournament will be held on March 23, 2013, at the Sandra Day O’Connor U.S. Courthouse building.
Family Law attorney Steven Everts has been invited to present at the Arizona Family Law Institute (For Better or For Worse) for the sixth consecutive year. Linda Jones, a legal assistant in Udall Shumway’s School Law group, has published a childrens book designed to introduce youngsters to letters in a fun and unique way. “Alphabet Anatomy: Meet the Capital Letters” uses rhymes and illustrations to teach each letter’s sound, shape, and how to write the letter, thus its anatomy. True to its motto, “the art of learning the letters and their lives,” Alphabet Anatomy explores “what the letters do behind the scenes when they’re not busy making words.” Linda plans to follow up with a companion book on lower-case letters in 2013.
