Each person who files for bankruptcy protection is required to take a credit counseling course before the case is filed. This course will cost you on average between $20 and $50. Once the course is completed, you will receive a certificate that will be attached to your petition. You will also be required to take a second course on financial management that must be completed before the court may grant you a discharge. The course is approximately the same cost.
The cost of the filing fees with the Bankruptcy Court are different depending on the Chapter you file. For example, fees for Chapter 7 are currently $306, and fees for Chapter 13 are currently $281. Other fees may apply in your case, so make sure to speak with your attorney regarding fees before you retain his/her services.
