When we leave our elderly relatives in nursing homes we believe that they are safe and will be provided the proper care that our loved ones deserve. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Nursing home neglect is much more common than many people realize and it occurs in facilities of all sizes and types. There are some important causes and signs of nursing home neglect and abuse that families need to be aware of.
Signs of Neglect and Abuse
There are a number of different signs of nursing home neglect or abuse. These include:
- Bruises or cuts
- Broken bones
- Depression or change in behavior
- Pressure sores
- Use of restraints
- Weight loss
Unfortunately, many injuries go unreported, making it difficult to know that a problem has occurred. Some patients are unwilling to make a report, others are afraid, and still others may be unable to let anyone know because of reduced mental or verbal capacity. It is often up to the relatives to remain on the lookout for signs of neglect. If anything out of the ordinary is noticed, a report should be made immediately.
Reasons for Neglect
Neglect in nursing homes can happen for a number of different reasons. Many times, nursing homes are understaffed, making it difficult to provide proper supervision to patients who require attention. Caregivers may not be properly trained to provide high quality care. Management may not establish or enforce rules and policies that safeguard patients. Whatever the reasons, neglect in nursing homes cannot be tolerated. Even minor injuries can become more complex for those who are elderly or have compromised immune systems.
Report Neglect
If you feel that your loved one has suffered an injury due to neglect, it should be reported to authorities and to management. In many situations, the patient’s injury was not noticed and the person was not examined by a doctor. Ensure that the injury is properly diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. A plan should be put into place to make sure that the situation is resolved and that the person will receive proper care in the future.
Seek Legal Help
Nursing home neglect happens all too often, and, sadly, is the cause of many injuries and deaths every year. If your loved one suffered a serious injury because of nursing home neglect, you may be entitled to compensation.
