Here are some tips on how to prepare for naturalization
Once you have decided you want to become a naturalized U.S. citizen there are some procedures that need to be followed. Those who are ready to take this step need to understand how to prepare for naturalization. The applicant must meet the eligibility requirements and then must submit Form N-400. After submitting the application you must begin to get ready to take the citizenship test and pass the interview process.
Study for the Test
The USCIS, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, provides some useful information on their website to assist in studying for naturalization. There are classes that can also be taken to prepare you for the interview and test. It is important to properly prepare because you must be able to pass the test and interview in order to become a naturalized citizen.
What You Need to Know
There are several aspects to the test and interview process for naturalization. The applicant must meet with a representative who will conduct the tests and interview.
- Proficient in English – You will need to show that you can read and write in English. Typically the interviewer will ask you to write a sentence or two and read several sentences.
- Knowledge of U.S. History – You must demonstrate that you know the basic history of the United States. You may prepare by reading about history or by taking a class. The interviewer will administer a short test.
- Know U.S. Laws – Along with general history, the applicant must also be familiar with common United States laws. These should be reviewed prior to the interview.
The U.S. civics test is comprised of just ten questions that are designed to help you demonstrate that you have an understanding of U.S. history and the laws that apply to citizens.
It is helpful to review the types of questions that will likely be on the civics test. Once you submit your application for naturalization you will have some time during which you can gather materials and spend time studying for the exam. You will receive a notice in the mail that lets you know the date, time, and location of your interview and test. It is important to be on time for your interview.
