Uber accidents are on the rise. Here are some tips if you are involved.

Uber and other ride sharing services make it easy and convenient to get around town.  As these ride sharing services become more pervasive, accidents and injuries will become more common too.  Uber drivers use their own vehicles to transport passengers. While Uber enforces strict safety and maintenance rules, Uber accidents can still happen and personal injury claims arising out of ride share service vehicles are on the rise.

What to do when you are involved in a Rideshare Service Accident.

If you are involved in an accident while in an Uber, Lyft, or other ride share option, first call local law enforcement and emergency personnel, if needed, for either yourself or other people involved.  The sooner the call is made to emergency personnel, the greater the chance there will be to address the needs of those involved and to avoid any further injury or disagreements that may arise.  Even if the injuries of the people involved appear to be minor, a police investigation and report can be helpful in confirming the circumstances of the accident and establishing fault.  However, even if law enforcement does not come to the scene, it is important to obtain the insurance information of both the driver and the sponsoring company.  One good way to document the insurance information is to take a cell phone photo of both sides of the driver’s proof of insurance card.  It will also be helpful to take photos of the damage to the vehicles involved, including the license plates, as well as the accident scene.  It is likely that the driver’s personal insurance policy will provide primary but limited coverage and the sponsoring company provides additional or excess coverage.  As a result, don’t leave the accident scene until you have obtained all the information you can.  This will make pursuing an injury claim more efficient later.
