National Teen Driver Safety Week Takes Place in October

Teen drivers are new to the road and are often involved in serious accidents. National Teen Driver Safety Week is designed to bring attention to the potential dangers facing young drivers. Teen drivers may feel invincible but motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death in the United States among those between the ages of 15 and 19 years old. National Teen Driver Safety Week takes place October 16 – 22, 2016.

Parents Must Assist with Teen Driver Safety

While laws are in place to provide safety to drivers, parents must do their part to help their teens drive more safely. Parents should make sure that their kids always wear their seatbelts and always pay attention while behind the wheel. The use of cell phones is prohibited and parents should restrict kids from using their phones while in the car. Parents are encouraged to have their teen drivers sign contracts that specify driving rules and consequences for failure to follow them.

The Basics of Teen Driver Safety Week

Teen Driver Safety Week stresses the “5 to Drive”. These are the 5 most important driving safety rules to review with teen drivers. These include:

  • Cell Phone Restriction While Driving
  • Driving at the Speed Limit
  • No Drinking and Driving
  • No Extra Passengers Allowed
  • Always Wear a Seatbelt

Following these simple safety rules will help to bring awareness to safe driving and reduce the incidence of accidents and injuries.

Inexperience May Cause of Teen Accidents

Teen drivers do not have the experience that older drivers have. When they encounter a difficult situation on the road they may not react properly. They may not have developed enough judgment when handling things such as turning safely and driving at the correct speed for conditions. Inexperience combined with inattentiveness could cause a teen driver to be unable to navigate a situation on the road and an accident could occur.

Accidents Caused by Teen Drivers

Parents and educators can utilize National Teen Driver Safety Week as a teaching tool to assist in teaching teens good driving habits. Unfortunately, some accidents will still happen, regardless of the increased awareness. If an accident with injuries happens it may be necessary to take legal action to get the compensation necessary to cover damages.
