Diversity Immigrant Visa Program Allows for Fair Disbursement of Visas

The diversity immigrant visa program is a special lottery that allows for a fair disbursement of visas. It is also called the green card lottery. It provides a way for the United States to more fairly provide green cards to qualifying applicants. The lottery currently provides 50,000 visas through the process. Applicants must be from countries with low immigration rates according to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Requirements to Participate in the Diversity Visa Lottery

There are several important requirements that must be met in order to participate in the program. The applicant must be from a designated country with low immigration rates. This data may change from time to time so it is important to find out the most current information. Applicants must have completed high school or have at least two years of work experience in a job that requires at least two years of training. The applicant’s country of birth is used to determine eligibility.

Availability of Diversity Lottery Visas

Although only 50,000 visas are provided in the program, there are millions of applications submitted. There are a number of applicants that do not meet the criteria. These applications are therefore not accepted. The lottery entry period is generally during the fall, with visas being provided the following September. You are allowed to submit your application only during this specific period of time. Visas are chosen at random from those that are eligible.

Applicants from Various Regions in the World

For purposes of the diversity lottery, the world is divided into various regions. Applicants are selected based on their region of birth. Countries may become ineligible to participate in the lottery. The current list of countries and regions can be found online through the USCIS website. It is important to note that some regions may not have enough applicants to participate. In some cases, applicants are chosen after the date set forth on the lottery, so you should check back to find out whether you have been chosen.

If You Have Not Been Selected

Many thousands of applicants who submitted applications to the lottery program were not selected. If you were not one of the lucky lottery winners, you may still be able to obtain a visa. In this case, you must submit a visa petition in the standard manner. You must meet the requirements and provide a new application along with the appropriate documentation.
