What to Do After a Parking Lot Collision

Since they aren’t major incidents, a parking lot collision is often reported far less than other types of automobile accidents. Despite this, they shouldn’t be overlooked. Even minor incidents like parking lot collisions can have a big impact on insurance premiums.

In a situation where it’s common for only one driver to be on the scene, however, what should you do?

What Should You do After a Parking Lot Collision?

An automobile accident in a parking lot can be handled much like any other. If damage has occurred to both vehicles, there are some set steps for you to follow:

1) Stay on the Scene

Above all else, don’t leave. If a security camera or person has seen you, you could end up racking up a hit and run charge.

2) Find the Owner of the Car

If you’re in a single-store parking lot, head back inside and speak management. Give them details of the vehicle, including the license plate number, and ask them to make an overhead announcement to track down the owner.

3) Leave a Note

Not only is it a legally sound decision, it’s also the morally right thing to do. Leave a note for the vehicle owner including your name, contact number and what happened. You should also be sure to take photos of the damage yourself, so you have evidence to show your insurer.

4) Contact the Police

If the automobile accident has caused significant damage to either vehicle, get in touch with the police. Not only will they officially record the accident, they’ll also help you find the other driver.

What Should You Do if You’re the Victim?

Let your insurer know what’s happened as soon as possible. They’ll be able to guide you through what to do next.

1) Take Photos and Notes

Take photos of the accident to use as evidence. The more detailed, the better. You should also make observational notes of the incident to assist your photographic evidence.

2) Ask Around

There’s a chance that someone else may have been in the parking lot at the time of the accident. Head back into the store and ask the customer service team to make an overhead announcement.
