What Is A Sanctuary City
A Sanctuary city is a metropolitan area that the local government has self-designated as a place where immigrants who are in the United States without proper authority might be helped. Although sanctuary cities are designated as such, they may not always be able to help.
What Makes a City Safe for Immigrants?
The local, state, and federal laws are always in effect and sometimes conflict with one another. However, in sanctuary cities, the local government has made the decision not to fully cooperate with immigration authorities as some believe is expected of it. A sanctuary city does not offer complete protection, but it could give people some sense of security. San Francisco, for example, passed a law prohibiting city employees, funds or resources from assisting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in enforcing federal immigration law unless it’s required by state or federal law.
New Executive Order
In January 2017, President Trump signed an executive order declaring the federal government will “strip federal grant money from the sanctuary states and cities that harbor illegal immigrants,” according to press secretary Sean Spicer.
The order declares that entities with laws creating “sanctuary jurisdictions” will be “not eligible” for federal grants, and the order further directed the Office of Management and Budget to compile federal grant money currently going to sanctuary jurisdictions.
Despite the order, many mayors in sanctuary cities refused to change their laws, which gained them the title of being a sanctuary city.
Is Phoenix a Sanctuary City
As of now, Phoenix does not have laws on the books which limits its employees cooperation with or involvement in federal immigration enforcement actions. Because of SB 1070, the state requires local police to comply with federal immigration enforcement. The Phoenix City Council said it would look at possible legal challenges but so far there has been no new announcements regarding this issue.
