The Right Employment Lawyer

A good website, a high ranking on Google or an attractive advertisement does not necessarily mean you have located a qualified employment law attorney that is right for you. It is important to take the time to learn a little about the attorney you intend to meet with and prepare for your initial meeting by considering questions you would like to ask.

You can learn a lot about the attorney you are considering by visiting their website. Their biography will likely include how long they have been practicing law, an overview of their employment law experience, and what specific types of employment law matters they handle.

Other questions you should consider asking include:

  • Have you handled any cases like mine? What was the outcome?
  • What are the possible outcomes of my case, and the chances of success?
  • What are my alternatives in resolving the matter?
  • What are the procedures involved in my case, and a rough time schedule for the different steps?
  • What complications can arise in my case, and can they result in additional fees?
  • Who else in your firm will I be speaking to regarding my case?
  • How will you keep me informed about what is happening on my case?
  • What kind of approach will you take – aggressive, or will you work to reach a reasonable settlement?
  • Are there any issues in this case you haven’t handled before?
  • Is there anything I can do to improve my situation in this case?

Don’t make up your mind about hiring a lawyer until you’ve met them in person, discussed your case, and feel comfortable with them. No amount of experience will matter if you don’t feel comfortable speaking to your own attorney.
